In medicine, prophylaxis means "prevention of disease". This term has a particularly strong emphasis in dentistry. Because without bacterial plaque, caries or periodontitis is also not possible.
Home oral care has its limits because, from a dental point of view, everyone has certain "problem areas" where plaque can accumulate.
In addition, many teeth are rotated or tilted. Thus, good tooth cleaning with a toothpaste and a normal toothbrush is unfortunately limited.

Even though professional tooth cleaning is not covered by the health insurance system, it is one of the most effective measures in prophylaxis. With the help of state-of-the-art instruments, we clean your teeth of bacterial plaque.
This reduces your risk of caries and periodontitis.
Which prophylaxis at the dentist is paid by the health insurance?
The prophylaxis regulations of the statutory health insurances are very similar, because the majority of the health insurance benefits are identical for all insurances.
For adults, a checkup is usually paid for twice a year, while scaling is only paid for once a year. Every two years, you are also entitled to participate in periodontitis screening.
Whether you are also entitled to a professional dental cleaning, you may have to clarify with your health insurance company. This is a voluntary benefit under the terms of some health insurance plans.
What is the Periodontal Screening Index?
Since 2004, the so-called Periodontal Screening Index has been one of the services provided by the statutory health insurers.
The diagnosis is made with a special, small probe. We use it to measure any gum pockets that may be present in the upper and lower jaw. This allows us to assess whether periodontitis may require treatment.
How much does prophylaxis cost for self-pay patients?
