The administration of nitrous oxide (N2O) is the oldest of all dental sedation procedures and has its origins as far back as the 19th century.
It is a very safe procedure that is used millions of times worldwide. Serious complications are not known to date.
Dental treatment under twilight sleep is particularly suitable in the following cases:

Simple and reassuring
Your dentist can perform laughing gas sedation independently; an anesthesiologist is not required. The advantage for you: as a patient, you remain responsive throughout the treatment and do not lose consciousness.
Laughing gas or the laughing gas-oxygen mixture has a calming, relaxing and anxiety-reducing effect. However, you as the patient are always conscious and responsive.
For this reason, we at Zahnpark Mannheim often use this procedure at the patient's request.
How does nitrous oxide affect me as a patient during treatment?
The gas mixture is absorbed extremely quickly in the blood and brain and leads to a kind of perceived "floating state".
This state does not last long. The dosage is adjusted exactly to you and to the duration of the treatment. Shortly after the treatment, the effect disappears and you can also drive again.

Do I have to pay for the laughing gas treatment in Mannheim myself?
Unfortunately, the costs for sedation with nitrous oxide are not covered by statutory health insurance. If you are interested, please contact us for further information.
Can nitrous oxide be used at the dentist during pregnancy?
Especially in the first trimester of pregnancy, dispensable applications of nitrous oxide should be avoided. We will be happy to advise you individually.
How long will I notice the nitrous oxide sedation?
The nitrous oxide dosage is precisely tailored to you and the planned dental procedure. The effect should disappear shortly after the treatment.
Can children also be sedated with nitrous oxide during dental treatment?
In principle, there is nothing to be said against the use of nitrous oxide in children. It can help to minimize any anxiety during the dental procedure.

Does nitrous oxide eliminate my toothache?
The use of nitrous oxide can usually significantly reduce pain and anxiety during your visit to the dentist. Often, no additional injections against the toothache are necessary.
For which diseases can I not use nitrous oxide?
In some cases, the use of nitrous oxide is not recommended or absolutely contraindicated. For example, nitrous oxide is NOT used
- shortly after eye surgery with intraocular gas
- Pneumothorax
- Ileus
- therapy with bleomycin
- as well as in some other situations.
We will discuss any contraindications with you before using nitrous oxide.
